Happiness Thought for the Day - September 30, 2021: Anger will only harms he who carries it

"The wounded person should ask himself: Is it worth filling my heart with hatred and dragging the weight of it around with me?' - Paulo Coelho, Manuscript Found in Accra

The scene of this quote from Paulo Coelho, whom I believe is the greatest contemporary fiction writer alive today, is the city of Accra lies on the verge of being sacked and the frightened people of the city have gathered around the wizened old figure of the Copt, whom they look to for wisdom, calm, and guidance at the precipice of their demise.

The words of Coelho, spoken here from the character of the Copt, are familiar to those who have read this blog before in that they echo the belief that anger is corrosive and destructive particular to whomever makes the decision to carry it around.

We can all easily recall times where we were hurt, offended, angered, or saddened by the words or deeds of another. Let us not be so arrogant to think that we have not caused similar harm to others, we are all only human of course.

Remember that we have control over our anger. We have the power to determine what we will allow to harm or insult us, and how we will react. Only the most enlightened of us have likely gained the power to eradicate the feeling of anger in any given situation. But for the rest of us, we do still possess the power and control needed to choose to forgive and let go of our anger.

It isn't worth filling your heart with rage or sorrow and dragging that weight around. Holding on to your anger is an obstacle to true happiness and one that is wholly within your power to control.

Let it go.
